Although the 155mm Gun GPF was not widely deployed by the US Army in combat during World War II, these weapons were sometimes used when captured. This is a 155mm GPFT, the most modern type in French service in 1940, with a new four-wheel configuration for motorized towing. There were a number of modifications and derivatives of the carriage during the war. M1A1s were simply the pilot T2 carriages refurbished for use, and were few in number. A variety of carriages were developed to permit the M1 to be used as a coastal defense weapon but none were standardized. The new M5 heavy carriage limber was developed to speed the emplacement of the gun compared to the basic M2 limber and was standardized in March 1944.
